What is the difference between an awakening and a disturbance?

Modified on Thu, 13 Apr, 2023 at 3:24 PM

Sleep disturbances refer to the total number of periods of wakefulness (5-40 minutes in duration each) during sleep; reported in 24-hour cycles. The fewer disturbances you have during sleep, the better:

  • 1 or fewer disturbances : Excellent

  • 2 disturbances : Fair

  • 3 or more disturbances : Poor

Whereas awakenings are periods of wakefulness that are less than 5 minutes in duration each.
